To get started, tell us a little about yourself, where you’re from, what your interests are, what are you looking forward to in this class this semester, and what are some of your favorite movies, or just one favorite.  Hope this works well for us and that we have a fun semester.

  1. My name is Travis Smith. I am from North Huntingdon which is about a half hour outside of Pittsburgh. Some of my expectations for this class were watching some probably different movies than what are shown in this class. I was looking forward to more classic films or more contemporary films such as “No Country for Old Men” or classic Hitchcock movies or other popular classics and Oscar Winners. Some of my favorite movies are the first two in The Godfather Trilogy. The Dark Knight, Raging Bull, No Country for Old Men, and There Will Be Blood.

  2. I’m Cory Hika, I’m a Junior here at IUP. I’m majoring in Communications Media with a Studio Art minor. I’m originally from Kittanning, PA which is roughly 40 minutes north west of here. I love doing anything creative and art like such as film making, editing videos, using photoshop, drawing, and painting. I also enjoy sitting down and playing guitar or bass. I’m looking forward to broadening my mind at how I watch movies and to maybe find some new movies or directors/producers that interest me. I love just about any kind of movie whether it be a something as silly as a Tim Burton film, to as deep as The Shawshank Redemption.

  3. My name is Allison Blimline (prefer Allie). I grew up in reading PA but recently moved to TX. I am, although, finishing up my schooling at IUP. I am a junior in school studying Hospitality Management. I am taking this class because 1.) I need a writing intensive class outside of my major and 2.) because I love movies! I love purchasing movies. Its something about owning them that makes me excited. I can honestly say I do not have ONE top favorite move, but some of my favorites are; Shes out of my league, Juno, Transformers, Season of the Witch, Iron Man, How to train your Dragon, Inception, Avatar, X-Men, Star Trek, Lord of the Rings, Star Wars, and most recently Man of Steel.

  4. My name is Megan McIntyre and I am a junior studying English. Most recently I was an English Education major, but I’m transferring to writing studies and literature. I’m from Bradford, Pennsylvania (home of the Zippo lighter!) which is up by New York State. My hobbies include drawing and painting with watercolors, studying French, reading, and fencing. I’m looking forward to exploring new movie genres in this class. I typically watch movies set in different time periods and based off of classical literature and it would be nice to explore some more iconic films and see how the filmmaking process varies between now and when it started to boom and how soundtracks vary between then and now also. My favorite movies include Pride and Prejudice, Marie Antoinette, Fight Club, Midnight in Paris, and anything starring Audrey Hepburn (particularly Funny Face.)

  5. My name is Kenny Fatino. I am a super senior studying physical therapy. I am from Blairsville, PA which is about fifteen minutes from Indiana. I recently just had a beautiful daughter with my girlfriend. I enjoy sports and outdoor activities. I love watching movies and TV shows (who doesn’t). Some of my favorite movies are Tarantino films, thrillers like Shutter Island and basically all of Scorcese films, and gangster movies. I am taking this class because I would like to learn more about how films are made and the thought process that goes into writing screenplays. I would like to better know how literary elements are involved in films. I also like to see movies I normally would not have watched without this class.

  6. My name is Katie Schroeder. I am a second semester junior studying theater and dance. I’m from Pittsburgh, PA. I obviously enjoy acting, and dancing, but I also enjoy writing, costuming and stage makeup (specifically gore). I love the movies and spend most of my money there. In this class I look forward to gaining a better understanding to more aspects of movies, and not just from an actors point of view or a costume / make up point of view. I’m also looking forward to the fact that we are looking at older movies as well as newer ones. Some of my favorite movies are Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind, The Majestic, Anastasia, Rasputin, Tootsie, and Hook. There are a lot more, but I don’t think I have the room to list them all.

  7. I’m Christy Purinton and I’m a “super senior” – so second year senior. I’m a Spanish major. I’m from Clarion, PA but I grew up in Herndon, VA. I really enjoy learning languages and in addition to my Spanish classes, am taking Arabic. I love to travel and have been to 11 countries so far. I also am rather obsessed with dancing – namely salsa, bachata, and west coast swing. I go once a week to pittsburgh to attend a dance class and a social dance for salsa and bachata.
I quite enjoy writing. I recently wrote an article for an online magazine and am in the process of interviewing an author of several published books for my next article.
My favorite movie as of now would probably be A League of Their Own. Its always been one of my favorites! I’m really looking forward to being exposed to movies I wouldn’t necessarily watch in my own time and learning how to analyze movies in a different way than what I’m used to.

  8. My name is Laura Hucik. My hometown is Weirton, WV, but I have lived in Windber, Pa, since the first grade. I am a Theater major with a concentration in Costume Design. For this class I hope to gain a better understanding of film. I have a few favorite movies. Some of these include Pride and Prejudice (2005), Sense and Sensibility (1995), Becoming Jane, and the Harry Potter series.

  9. My name is Shayna Lyle, and I am a senior in the English Education program. I am from Punxsutawney and I commute everyday. I enjoy reading, writing, watching cooking shows, and I enjoy my job here on campus. I hope to learn how to analyze film in this c lass, along with different aspects and styles of film. I don’t have a particular favorite movie, but here are some of my favorites: Burlesque, A League of Their Own, and Titanic.

  10. I’m Angela Davies, i’m a junior and I’m a Biology major. I’m from Bellefonte, PA which is about 15-20 minutes away from State College. I chose to take this class because I love movies and a family friend highly recommended taking a film studies course whenever I got the chance. I look forward to learning more about film and hopefully discover some new movies and directors. I like to watch all movies, some of my favorites are Across the Universe, The Illusionist, Silver Linings Playbook and I like a lot of films by Woody Allen and Judd Apatow.

  11. My name is Ryan O’Toole and I am a senior at IUP. My major is economics and I am taking this course to fulfill my writing intensive requirements to graduate in the spring. Pro Wrestling Illustrated ranked me as the 432nd best professional wrestler in the world for this past year and I also enjoy watching sports. My favorite movies are anything with Arnold Schwarzenegger and Sylvester Stallone in them. Recent movies I have watched include Bullet to the Head, 42, and Olympus Has Fallen.

  12. My name is Brian Davis, and I am from Heilwood, Pa. I’m a junior studying journalism/public relations. I enjoy writing and have a love for movies, so I figured this class would tickle my fancy. I’m also the kind of guy who uses the phrase “tickle my fancy.” I was particularly excited about this class when I saw we will be watching Clint Eastwood’s Unforgiven this semester. Here are some movies I enjoy: Dr. Strangelove, 2001: A Space Odyssey, Fargo and The Road Warrior.

  13. Hi everyone! My name is Tiffany Wiechelt, and I am a sophomore. I’m from Oakdale, PA which is about an hour and a half away from here. I am a Secondary English Education Major, and I adore writing! I also play the piano (and have for 13 years). I love music and literature, and I also love a good movie/TV show. To be honest, I took this class for my major, but I am excited for it. I’m especially looking forward to the independent project; the idea of writing seven pages about a favorite movie is really exciting (I know that’s a bit weird). Some of my favorite movies are Harry Potter, The Lord of the Rings, Newsies, Mary Poppins, The Dark Knight Trilogy, The Sound of Music, Dead Poet’s Society, Pirates of the Caribbean, and practically anything Disney.

  14. Hi, I’m Tori. I’m a junior with an English education major, Spanish minor from the Harrisburg area. I’m taking this course as one of my requirements for the English education program, and I’d like to learn a few things about the value of film that will help justify its use in the classroom. I’m a sucker for Disney movies and really good romantic comedies, which unfortunately seem to be pretty rare. My experience with movies is limited and hopefully this class will fill in some of the gaps of my movie-watching history.

  15. Hi, my name is Evan Toman, I’m from Blairsville, PA, and I previously attended Point Park University. I’m a junior studying communications media in hopes of broadening my knowledge of photography. I enjoy taking photographs, modeling, singing, and music. I’m looking forward to this class to be able to analyze and appreciate movies more, as well as to broaden my horizons when it comes to the type of movies I watch. Some of my favorite movies include the Harry Potter series, the Lord of the Rings movies, Tim Burton’s Alice in Wonderland, Sucker Punch.

  16. My name is Keyana Coston. I am from Philadelphia,Pa. My interest are writing, and reading. I am an English major and minoring in film studies. I am hoping to learn how to view movies and actually learn from them. I feel that through movies there are lessons that you learn. Some of my favorite movies are Crooklyn, Taken and Stepbrothers.

  17. My name is Ryan Thornhill and I am a senior theater major originally from Curwensville PA. I love watching movies is the main reason I’m taking this class but even further analyzing and dig deep brothers movies will help me as well being a theater major and analyzing scripts. If I had to narrow it down to what movie is my favorite at this point in time it would be The Great Gatsby.

  18. I am Keyonna Savage, also known as “Kay”. I am a Philadelphian and this is my senior year. I study Communications media with a minor in computer science and will be a film and possibly television series director. This semester I am looking forward to learning all that I can about film composition, form and all that goes into the skeleton or make up of a good film. I have a slew of favorites movies but I’ll just name a few. The Cohen Bros. O’ Brother where art thou?, Quintin T’s Death Proof, The Color Purple, Love and Basketball, Sabrina, Ben X (indie)…The list goes on and on!

  19. My name is Logan Riser and I’m from Gettysburg, Pa which has become a pretty popular place this past year. I have always had an interest in film and television since I was a little kid. I always told my family I wanted to be make movies and be a part of some sort of production process so I believe taking a course where I get to watch films and break them down will be right up my alley. My favorite movies mostly come from the Coen brothers and Quentin Tarrantino. The Big Lebowski is one of my all time favorites.

  20. My name is Siriam Kulsuwan, I was born and raised from Thailand. I came to America because education is much better here. I am an studio art major, this is my last semester of college. I am excited to start my life using skills that I learned from class in the “real world.” I have two years old son, he is the reason why I watch a lot of movies and that’s why I am interest in this class.

  21. I’m Dan Yurek-Leiser, I’m from Plum which is 25 minutes from Pittsburgh. I love film and wanted to learn more about the process it went through to get where it is today. I also wanted to gain an understanding of how critics truly judge movies. My favorite movies range from The Dark Knight to East of Eden so this class will definitely help me expand my knowledge of different movie genres.
